Support for legal compliance
Through the project Zima Centre supports Not-for-Profit Organizations (NPOs) in different legal obligations including incorporation, registration with different entities, filing returns among others.
The project is based on the background that NPOs in Uganda are some of the most regulated entities in the world. There are numerous requirements that the entities have to meet before they can be allowed to operate. Often the requirements are tedious and a number of times they are technical needing professional legal support to be addressed. However, most NPOs and donors rarely provide funds for legal compliance and meeting these obligations. This has resulted in many entities not been able to meet the obligations and at times attracting sanctions from government such as heavy fines, closures or suspension from doing particular activities.
Under the Legal Candle project, we focus on supporting organizations to enable them meet the legal obligations so they can be able to concentrate on meeting their mandate.
The Legal Candle Program uses a cost sharing approach where the organization meets its costs of meeting government obligations and Zima Centre for legal and constitutional studies provides legal advice either at a subsidised cost or freely depending on availability of resources.
